A Place Called Lagos

Lagos is a state in the south-western part of Nigeria, and was once the country’s capital. It will humble you before breakfast and inspire you by lunch. It’s expensive, crowded and demanding, and it won’t slow down for you. It is also one of the most alive cities I know of.

Everyone here is building something: a business, a brand, a skill, a side hustle. People don’t wait for permission. If you’re ambitious, you’ll never feel alone in that ambition, and the pace pushes you to keep up. The energy is contagious. Stay around it long enough and you start moving faster too.

Lagos rewards people who show up prepared. Connections, skills and consistency matter more than luck, and anyone who tells you it’s easy to make it here isn’t telling the whole story. Lagos doesn’t care about your feelings; it cares about your output. It doesn’t give you time to be vague. The city moves fast and favors the brave: people who show up with a clear direction and the will to outwork their doubts.

It’s also a very dynamic place, with a mix of cultures, tribes and backgrounds, and a humor, food, music and style you won’t find anywhere else. Even on the worst days, the city has character.

But hustle without direction is just noise and a waste of time. The energy here is real and highly influential, and if you’re gullible, you can easily lose your way. Lagos either makes you or breaks you; there is no in-between.

Then there’s the traffic, one of the craziest experiences of all. It can eat half your day. Costs are high, power and infrastructure can be unreliable, and the pressure to keep hustling never really switches off. Everyone’s a CEO, and everyone’s cousin has a “business idea.” You’ll learn patience, negotiation and prayer in a single danfo ride. Lol.

Lagos is a great place to build, learn and grow, but come with a plan, a skill and thick skin. Treat it as a launchpad, whether you stay for good or move on someday. Come prepared, and it might just be the best classroom you ever had.
